Your concrete driveway has expansion joints for a reason — they give the slabs room to expand and contract with temperature changes. But those joints don't last forever. When the old caulk breaks down or was never applied in the first place, problems start creeping in. Here are five signs it's time to caulk your driveway.
1. Weeds and Grass Growing Through the Joints
If you see weeds, grass, or moss growing out of your driveway joints, that means the joints are open and exposed to soil and moisture underneath. Pulling the weeds is a temporary fix — the roots are already down in the joint and they'll grow back. Caulking seals the joint and eliminates the environment weeds need to grow.
2. Old Caulk Is Cracked, Peeling, or Missing
Take a look at the joints in your driveway. If the existing caulk is cracked, pulling away from the concrete, or missing in sections, it's no longer doing its job. Old caulk dries out over time and loses its flexibility, especially in Cleveland's freeze-thaw climate. Once it cracks, water gets in and the damage cycle starts.
3. Water Pools Along the Joints After Rain
If you notice water sitting in or along the joints after it rains, that water is seeping under your slabs. In the winter, that water freezes, expands, and pushes your concrete apart. This is the number one cause of driveway damage in Northeast Ohio. Proper caulking creates a watertight seal that keeps water on the surface where it belongs.
4. Gaps or Separation Between Slabs
If you can see visible gaps between your driveway slabs — or if the joints look wider than they used to — the base material underneath may be eroding. Water washes out the gravel and sand under the concrete, causing the slabs to shift and settle. Caulking stops this by keeping water from reaching the base material in the first place.
5. Your Driveway Was Recently Leveled
If you had a concrete leveling company raise your sunken slabs, caulking the joints afterward is the most important step to protect that investment. Without caulking, water will get right back under the slabs and wash out the base material again — and you'll be back where you started. We work alongside Atlas Concrete Leveling and other concrete leveling companies in the Cleveland area to finish the job right.
Bottom Line
Driveway caulking is one of the most cost-effective things you can do to protect your concrete. It's a fraction of the cost of replacing a driveway, and it prevents the problems that lead to expensive repairs down the road. If you're seeing any of these signs, it's time to get your joints sealed.
